The Housing Choice Voucher program uses payment standards to calculate the housing assistance payment (HAP) that the Public Housing Agency pays to landlords on behalf of participating families. Per federal regulation 24 C.F.R. 982.4, the payment standard represents the maximum monthly assistance payment for a family assisted in the voucher program (before deducting the total tenant payment by the family).
The applicable payment standard for any family equals the lower of either the standard for their authorized unit size or the standard for their actual leased unit size.
